St. Nicholas’ Church (Nikolaikirche) on Alter Markt with its dome visible from all directions is probably the most striking building in the state capital of Potsdam and exudes Italian flair. After the old St. Nicholas’ Church burned down in 1795, reconstruction was planned in 1800. The laying of the foundation stone for the building designed by Karl Friedrich Schinkel was delayed until 1837, however.

After various planning ideas were considered, a central building prevailed resembling a cube on a square ground plan. Initially only the substructure was completed. Only later was the domed roof added. In 1850 the church was consecrated again. After suffering severe destruction in the Second World War, the church was consecrated for the third time in 1981. Since then, services have been held there every Sunday.

The church is also a venue for numerous concerts and events. An admission fee of 5 Euro is charged for the church visit and the ascent of the tower.  From the 42-metre-high viewing platform, guests can enjoy a magnificent view of the entire city.
