The castles and parks of Potsdam and Berlin have been part of the UNESCO World Heritage since December 1990. However, until now, many residents and visitors of the city have only been familiar with Sanssouci Palace and Park as UNESCO sites. To show the diversity and uniqueness of Potsdam's World Heritage, the capital city Potsdam has been participating in events for the nationwide UNESCO World Heritage Day since 2006, which takes place on the first Sunday of June each year. These events aim to raise public awareness that having a UNESCO World Heritage is a privilege and should create pride in the city's residents and guests. It also emphasizes the obligation to care for and preserve the UNESCO World Heritage.
